A famous story suggests that Isaac Newton (1642-1727) discovered the laws of gravity by watching an apple fall from a tree, although it is not certain that this is true.  To get a feel for this discovery, click here.

Newton, mathematician and physicist, was one of the foremost scientific intellects of all time.

He helped define the laws of gravity and planetary motion, co-founded the field of calculus, and explained laws of light and color, among many other discoveries.  Newton was knighted in 1705.
